POINTS OF INTEREST

Astoria’s beautiful “Bridge to the World” stretches 4.1 miles across the mouth of the Columbia River connecting Astoria, Oregon and Point Ellice, Washington.  Opened in August 1966 as a toll bridge, many called it the “Bridge to Nowhere” and doubted it would ever pay for itself.  The bonds were paid and the toll removed in December 1993.I think this is an amazing bridge; it reminds me of the Bridge of the Americas, linking North America with South America.

Astoria has the Astoria Column and the Columbia River Maritime Museum, known as one of the world’s best maritime museums.

Fort Stevens was a primary military defense installation in the three fort Harbor Defense Systems at the mouth of the Columbia River. The fort served for 84 years, beginning with the Civil War and closing at the end of World War II.  This is the site where the mainland U.S. was attacked There is a Civil War museum, and you can visit the only enclosed Civil War earthworks site on the west coast, and explore the gun batteries.

Peter Ireale shipwreck is near Fort Stevens.

Fort Clatsop commemorates the 1805-06 winter encampment of the 33-member Lewis and Clark Expedition. The fort, historic canoe landing, and spring are nestled in the coastal forests and wetlands of the Coast Range as it merges with the Columbia River Estuary

Seaside is one of the oldest beach resorts on the West Coast, the end of the Lewis & Clark Trail. And the end of the “Hood to Coast” relay.  Seaside has an almost two mile long ocean-side promenade.  Downtown has arcades, restaurants, galleries, and a variety of gift and specialty shops. Close to town is a Factory Outlet Mall, and movie theater a Seaside Aquarium.

Cannon Beach is a charming resort community, home of much photographed Haystack Rock, a protected marine garden easy access to tide pools.  In town you’ll find various and interesting retail shops, restaurants, and art galleries.  When you walk on the beach listen for the famous “Singing Sands”, a natural phenomenon.  Artists, photographers, and writers love Cannon Beach.  There are more than twenty galleries and shops on Hemlock Street.

Hug Point is a park with beach access just south of Cannon Beach, one more great spot to walk on the beach.

Manzanita was once a well kept secret.  An escape to a 7 mile stretch of pristine beach known to only a few.   You too can share in the secret enjoy the romance and character of a charming beach town.  Since Manzanita is not directly on highway 101, this affords quieter and secluded beach vacation.  You can spend your day beachcombing or "antique hunting”, shop, dine, or indulge yourself in golf, tennis, surfing, and many other coastal activities.   The public can hold events, such as receptions, at the Pine Grove community Center.

Nehalem is like a page from history, sporting false-front buildings and friendly people.  There are Antique shops and specialty stores Time to eat?  Take your pick from area cafes, espresso shops, and restaurants. Pause to enjoy the Nehalem River front; you may see kayakers, fishermen, or seals.  Nehalem also has a public swimming pool and recreation center.

Wheeler, population 300, may be small, but there’s a boat dock, kayak rental, restaurants, antique shops, an exceptional Charity Thrift store, and retail shops...  Wheeler is a movie star, staring as the Australian village in “Point Break”

Rockaway Beach is considered one of the most family-oriented towns on the North Oregon Coast.  You’ll find miles and miles of uncrowded beach, cluttered only with drift wood and shells.  Low tide is the time for clamming.

The city plans many family activities during the summer, including building sand castles, kite flying, art and craft shows, and the “Fun Run Steam Train schedules stops in Rockaway Beach

Garibaldi has evolved from a Tillamook Indian whaling village, to a major lumber shipping port, and is now developing into a tourist destination.  Garibaldi is still a rustic fishing village, a great place to hire a fishing charter, buy fresh fish direct from the harbor, or to enjoy fresh fish in the restaurants, they do serve things other than fish.  You can shop the antique stores, rent scuba equipment, fish and crab, and at low tide the clamming is great.  Visit the Garibaldi Museum.

Tillamook is one of the larger towns along the Oregon Coast, and home to the Tillamook Cheese Factory.  Just south of town is the Tillamook Naval Air Museum, the largest wooden structure in the world.  This was a Blimp Hanger in W.W.II.

Munson Creek falls in seven miles south of Tillamook; it’s the highest waterfall in the coast range.
